Gasoline Diesel Vehicles Dominate India Auto Market

Gasoline vehicles have been the top sellers in recent years in India, with diesel vehicles lagging behind. However, India still holds the highest diesel car market share with 47%, compared to gasoline vehicles. In an effort to cut production of polluting diesel vehicles, India’s Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari targeted diesel carmakers, warning them to produce polluting diesel vehicles or face higher taxes. This has sparked a conversation about the future of electric vehicles (EVs) in the country.

So far this year, sales of petrol vehicles have continued to track ahead of diesel vehicles, with gasoline vehicles holding a market share of around 68.4%. Many consumers find petrol vehicles to be cheaper than diesel options, leading to the shift in market preferences. In an emergency measure to address air pollution issues, the Indian government also imposed higher taxes on diesel vehicles to encourage the adoption of cleaner alternatives.
